Spooky Season at Maltings Cinema

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Comes To Maltings Cinema For A Special Halloween Screening

Maltings Cinema and The Straw Yard team up for a night of cocktails, costumes and cult cinema, celebrating the enduring appeal of one of the world’s most iconic cult classics.

Get ready to dust off your corsets, fishnets and gold hot pants as Maltings Cinema and their neighbours at The Straw Yard join forces this Halloween for a full-throttle celebration of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

On Friday 30 October, audiences are invited to step out of the lab and into the madness with an evening combining a themed pre-screening party at The Straw Yard with an interactive singalong screening at Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks.

The evening kicks off at 6pm at The Straw Yard, where guests can get into the Rocky Horror spirit with themed cocktails, rock and roll and a high-energy party atmosphere. Dressing up is heavily encouraged, with prizes awarded for the most spectacular, outrageous and dedicated costume of the night.

Then, at 8pm, it's time to make the short walk over to Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks for the main event: a special singalong screening of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This is no ordinary cinema screening. Audiences are encouraged to warm up their vocal cords, shout at the screen and embrace the wonderfully anarchic spirit of Rocky Horror – with audience participation not just encouraged, but mandatory.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has become one of cinema’s most enduring cult classics, with its outrageous characters, unforgettable songs and legendary audience participation making it a film that has been bringing people together for generations. It’s the perfect excuse to channel your inner Frank, Janet, Brad or Magenta and celebrate a film that has to be experienced together.

Daniel Cox, Programme Manager from The Maltings said:
“Rocky Horror is one of those films that is made to be experienced together. We wanted to create a really fun, celebratory night where audiences can dress up, let loose and enjoy this wonderfully bonkers film on the big screen. Whether you're a lifelong fan or have never seen it before, this is your invitation to join us for a night of pure Rocky Horror fun.”

Whether you're a lifelong fan, discovering the film for the first time, or simply looking for something gloriously different to do this Halloween, this is an evening designed to be experienced together.

Something Spooky Is Coming To Maltings Cinema This October

From witchy magic and psychological thrills to family-friendly frights and a legendary Halloween singalong, Maltings Cinema has something for everyone this spooky season.

October is getting a little darker at Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks, with a month of films bringing magic, mystery, mayhem and plenty of spooky fun to the big screen.

The spooky season gets underway with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman starring in Practical Magic 2, arriving at Maltings Cinema on 2, 3, 4 and 8 October. Returning as the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, the pair are back for a new chapter of magic, family and mayhem – and you don't need to have seen the original Practical Magic to enjoy this one. Steeped in moonlit mischief, ancestral magic and a dark family curse, the sequel promises plenty of fun, nostalgia and spellbinding entertainment, with a sensory friendly screening also taking place on Sunday 4 October.

Things take a darker turn later in the month with Verity, screening from 23–29 October. Adapted from Colleen Hoover's bestselling novel, the psychological thriller stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett and follows a struggling writer who arrives at a remote estate to ghostwrite for an incapacitated author, only to uncover disturbing secrets that blur the lines between fiction and reality.

For younger audiences and families, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom brings a more playful kind of Halloween chaos to the cinema from 24–31 October. When Farmer accidentally ruins the pumpkin patch, Shaun's attempts to fix things with science experiments lead to the arrival of a mysterious wild beast in the woods. The new Aardman adventure also has a sensory friendly screening at 2pm on Friday 30 October.

Then, on Friday 30 October, things get seriously spooky – and seriously silly – with The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Straw Yard Party & Cinema Singalong. In partnership with neighbouring creative venue The Straw Yard, the evening begins with a themed pre-screening party from 6pm, complete with cocktails, rock and roll and prizes for the best costumes, before audiences make the short walk to Maltings Cinema for an 8pm interactive singalong screening. Dressing up is encouraged and shouting at the screen is, quite simply, mandatory.

And if your idea of Halloween fun is something a little more darkly comic, Bad Apples arrives on Halloween itself, Saturday 31 October. Starring Saoirse Ronan as a teacher pushed to breaking point by an unruly pupil and an underfunded school system, this jet-black comedy blends satire, suspense and shocking twists for a very different kind of Halloween night out.

Daniel Cox, Programme Manager at Maltings, said:

“October is always a great opportunity to have a bit of fun with our cinema programme, and this year we've got a brilliant mix of films that shows just how different spooky season can be. From the magic and nostalgia of Practical Magic 2, through to a genuinely unsettling thriller, a family adventure with Shaun the Sheep and, of course, our big Rocky Horror Halloween celebration, there really is something for everyone. Whether you want to be scared, entertained, nostalgic or just have a great night out, we've got your October evenings covered.”

With films ranging from a U-rated family adventure to 15-rated psychological thrillers and dark comedy, audiences can choose their own level of spooky this October at Maltings Cinema.
